My man of the match last night. With him and Ogg I wasn't for one minute worried they would be attacking us down the middle.

Possession football is boring - love the counter-attacking.

Pedro does a great job in putting players under pressure and forcing errors.

Luis Boa Morte was in the 1980 cup winning side?

Re: Pedro Obiang
Not sure how relevant this is to the argument but the top teams in France, Italy, Spain and Germany also all top the possession charts.

However, in those cases, they also have the best players.

I think the conclusion I'm looking to draw is, if you have the best players in the world, possession means a great deal.

If you don't, you need to find another way to win. West Ham and Leicester have done that this season.

Bournemouth, Everton and Swansea all like to dominate possession. Hardly setting the world alight are they?! The quality of player within the style of play is much more important....

Payet, Lanzini, Sakho, Kouyate, Valencia, Antonio, Moses are all players that are much better in a counter attacking team than they would be a possession based ones. You play to your strengths.....

Lets take it easy on old Fartface, as he is improving. I don't think he said that our manager was a useless cunt last night.

The blatant foul on Paul Allen by Willie Fucking Young, almost certainly prevented another shot on target

Re: Pedro Obiang
We had 3 shots in the goal! ;-)

Re: Pedro Obiang

It was...

Arsenal 74% Possession
West Ham 26% Possession

Arsenal 23 shots (21 on target)
West Ham 1 shot (1 on target)

I'm sure we had a second shot, someone went round the keeper up at our end and put it wide.

Re: Pedro Obiang
I bet if you did a comparison between the top 6's possession stats & the bottom 6's stats the top 6 would be much higher.

What does this prove? Evidently nothing because Leicester play on the counter attack.

you're saying it's essential to have the majority of possession to win games.

Alex V 5:06 Thu Mar 3
Yes of course possession doesn't guarantee you win every time. Yes teams with low possession can do well.

I should imagine Sunderland and Newcastle have fairly poor possession stats too

Re: Pedro Obiang
Does anybody remember the posession stats from the 1980 cup final?

I don't. It seems from memory that Arsenal had a lot of the ball, but all I really remember was Brooking's goal, THAT foul by Willie Young on Paul Allen and us coming home with the cup.

Far Cough 6:07 Thu Mar 3
Re: Pedro Obiang
West Ham have very few larger possession stats in games we have played this year and where are we sitting, and I would hazard a guess, Leicester are pretty much the same, counter attacking teams like us and Leicester can overcome your tippy tappys, so shove your possession stats up your arse

Takashi Miike 6:05 Thu Mar 3
Re: Pedro Obiang
you're saying it's essential to have the majority of possession to win games. it isn't

Alex V 6:04 Thu Mar 3
Re: Pedro Obiang
Sometimes teams of 10 men beat 11 men. So keeping 11 players on the field means fuck all.

Sometimes people with a healthy diet die, while people with unhealthy diets survive. Healthy diets mean fuck all.

stewie griffin 6:03 Thu Mar 3
Re: Pedro Obiang
Possession stats are totally irrelevant, and last night was a perfect indication of why.

We controlled the game from start to finish (barring maybe a 5 minute spell).
